Dana Johnston Hammond of Newark, Ohio, October 3, 1922 – November 26, 2018

A graveside service will be held at a later date at Welsh Hills Cemetery, for Dana Johnston Hammond, 96, of Newark, who passed away November 26, 2018, at Friendship Village Columbus.  He was born October 3, 1922, in Chatham, OH, to the late Roy J. and Jessie (Kuntz) Hammond.

 

Dana retired from Stewart Brothers & Alward Furniture Store.  Dana was a WWII Army and Navy Reserve Veteran.  He graduated from OSU in 1949.  He was 25 years charter member of Newark Evening Lions, member of Knights of Pythias, past member of CIT, and a member of 2nd Presbyterian church where he volunteered at the food pantry and was an usher and trustee.  He enjoyed watching sports and reading newspapers and magazines.

 

Dana is survived by his loving wife, Betty Jayne (Briggs) Hammond, whom he married on March 20, 1943; daughters, Patricia A. (James) Hull of Naples, FL and Peggy M. (Frank) Sawyer of Sebring, FL; grandchildren, Lynne (Jerry) Corbin of Westerville, OH, C.J. Howard of New York, NY, and Joshua (Alicia) Harter of Etna, OH, and great-grandchildren, Seth (Megan) Braddock, Brock Harter, and Gavin Harter.

 

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, Edwin Hammond, and twin sisters, Loretta Swinehart and Rosetta Barrett.

Charles Lee Kuzma Balser of Newark, OH, June 17, 1981 – November 27, 2018

Charles Lee Kuzma Balser, age 37, of Newark, passed away on Tuesday, November 27, 2018. He was born on June 17, 1981 in Newark, OH. 

He is survived by his father, Lee Balser and birth mother, Paula Nicodemus. 

No public services will be held. 

James Lewis Brooks of Newark, Ohio, October 10, 1035 – November 25, 2018

A funeral service for James Lewis Brooks, 83, of Newark, will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with Pastor Eva Marie Wolfe officiating.  Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday prior to the service at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark.

James, a retired Industrial Arts Teacher for the Newark City Schools, passed away November 25, 2018, at Flint Ridge Nursing Home.  He was born October 10, 1935, in Bellaire, Ohio, to the late Sam and Elizabeth (Haught) Brooks.

James was a member of Neal Ave. United Methodist Church and a member of the Licking County Retired Teachers Association.  He was an avid fisherman and gardener.

He is survived by his wife, Glenna J. (Fitch) Brooks; daughter, Laura Chordas of Stockport; son, Doug Brooks of Athens; brother, Ken (Sandy) Brooks of Akron; grandchildren, Jennifer (Jacob) Spencer of TN and Raad Page of Columbus; great-grandchild, Theodore Spencer of TN, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by two sisters and two brothers.

Mary L. (White) Reed of Newark, Ohio, December 29, 1926 – November 22, 2018

A funeral service for Mary L. (White) Reed, 91, of Newark, will be held at 12:00 p.m. Friday at Brucker and Kishler Funeral Home, with Pastor Wally McLaughlin officiating. Burial will follow in Poplar Forks Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home, 985 N. 21st St. Newark.

Mary passed away November 22, 2018, at her residence. She was born December 29, 1926, in Granville, Ohio, to the late Elmer Tenet and Alice (Pletcher) White.
Mary graduated from Union High School in Kylesburg, Ohio.  She was a real estate agent for John Eshelman.  She was a member of Welch Hills Church where she played piano and organ for 20 years and was also a Sunday School Teacher. She had a love for horses and owned a 200-acre farm where she had horses and black angus cows. She was a 4H advisor for The Trailbusters in Granville for 24 years. She rescued many cats.

She is survived by her daughters, Sue Flack of Newark and Rose (James) Dreiss of Columbus; two grandchildren, Barb (Kevin) Shaw of Columbus, and Mindy Flack of Newark; two great-grandchildren, Amber Shaw of Reynoldsburg and Travis Shaw of Whitehall; great-great-grandchildren, Braden, Riley, and Shelby, and several nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles L. Reed (Retired Newark Policeman); daughter, Alice Jacks, and brother, Charles White.

Nancy Lee Taylor of Newark, OH, February 18, 1948 – November 22, 2018

Nancy L. Taylor, age 70, of Newark, passed away peacefully on Thursday, November 22, 2018 at Arlington Care Center. She was born on February 18, 1948 to the late Edward and Juanita (Friend) Rader in Akron, OH.

Mrs. Taylor is survived by her loving husband of 52 years, Richard; daughter, April (John) Fridinger; grandchildren, Devin and Tyler Fridinger, and Amber Taylor; and siblings, Tricia (Fred) Ecker and Ed Rader.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her daughter, Vickie Taylor.

Melvin L. Lewis of Newark, Ohio, May 25, 1949 – November 14, 2018

Melvin L. Lewis, 69, of Newark, passed away Wednesday, November 14, 2018 in Newark. He was born May 25, 1949, in Portsmouth, a son of the late Melvin Lewis and Rosie (Cook) Nelson. He had been an avid outdoorsman, enjoyed hunting and was a member of the Dog Hollow Sportsman’s Club.
Surviving are his children, Connie (Jeff) Smith, Paul (Julia) Lewis; grandchildren Garrett Lewis, Robert (Rachel) Center, Mathew Lewis, Andrew (Destiny) Lewis and Gram Lewis; six great-grandchildren; siblings, Connie (Jim) Van Allen and Chet (Dianna) Nelson; many nephews and nieces and his former wife Sally Lewis.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by seven siblings and niece Jamica Van Allen.

Bonnie Lou Webb of Reynoldsburg, Ohio, January 21, 1942 – November 19, 2018

Bonnie Lou Webb, 76, of Reynoldsburg, died Monday, November 19, 2018 at her home. She was born January 21, 1942 in Man, WV.

Bonnie was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and sister. She loved spending time with her grand babies. She enjoyed working in her yard, being outdoors, cooking, and collecting bird memorabilia.

She is survived by daughter, Sharon Everetts of Reynoldsburg; son, Roger (Sheri) Webb of Newark; grandchildren, Pamela Webb, Jennifer Webb, Misty Everetts, Michele Everetts, Dominic Webb, and Bella Webb; great grandchildren, Edward and August; and brothers, Ottice (Shirley) Blevins and Earl Blevins.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Wilbert “Buddy” Webb; three sisters, Florence, Betty, and Dorothy; and one brother, Bobo.

Danny Charles McClain of Newark, Ohio, January 20, 1958 – November 12, 2018

Memorial Hospital.  He was born January 20, 1958, in Newark

to Rose (McGuire) McClain and the late Samuel McClain.

Danny was a US Army Veteran. 

Harold Franklin Hindman of Newark, Ohio, July 14, 1935 – November 15, 2018

Harold Franklin Hindman, 83, of Newark, passed to Heaven on Thursday, November 15, 2018. He was born July 14, 1935, a son of the late George Franklin and Merle Elizabeth Hindman.
He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps and had retired from Rockwell. Following his retirement, he and his wife were dedicated members of The Salvation Army and ran the Salvation Army Shelter in Newark for many years. He was a member of the Frazeysburg Lodge #490, F.&A.M. and loved traveling around by car with his wife over the years. His most treasured times were spent with his grandchildren, especially the times at Rolling Ridge Ranch.
He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Shirley Louise Hindman, son Robert Hindman; step-son Donald Charles; 13 grandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren and man
y nieces and nephews. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by many brothers and sisters.
A Memorial Gathering will be held at Brucker-Kishler Funeral Home, 985 N. 21st Street in Newark, on Friday, December 28, 2018, from 12pm-4pm, followed by a Memorial Service at 4pm. The Licking County Veterans Alliance will present Military Funeral Honors and Captain Denise Martin will officiate.

Betty Jane Colburn of Newark, January 21, 1923 – November 13, 2018

Betty Jane Colburn, 95, of Newark, died Tuesday, November 13, 2018 at her home. She was born January 21, 1923 in Pataskala to the late Jim and Ina (Selbert) Lennington.

Betty was a member of the Licking Baptist Church. She loved to bake, especially pies and enjoyed gardening.

She is survived by son, David Colburn and wife Marsha of Newark; daughter, Debra Colburn of Newark; two grandchildren, Anthony Colburn and wife Vanessa and Ashley McCormick and husband Gary; and five great grandchildren, Kirklund Colburn, Mason Martin, Braxton McCormick, Aubree Colburn, and Olivia Colburn.

She will be missed by her extended family and friends.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, John S. Colburn; grandson, Aaron Colburn; and brother, Stewart Lennington.
